A small, nicely done, watercolor painting - signed R.L. Davey. This lovely little landscape is framed in a very economical frame which I feel safe in dating to the 1930's. The painting has been placed between a card backing and a backboard, with a piece of glass on top. The mat has been hand decorated with pencil and a touch of color. The whole was then taped around the edge with black tape, and then again with gold tape. The hanger on the back is a piece of string. This surprisingly attractive style of framing was fairly common in the 20's and 30's. What is so surprising about the framing style, is that it is almost never used anymore....
The painting is a landscape of spring birch and alder, meadows and fields. The area of the painting is 4-3/4" x 6-3/4". The full frame (glass) size is approximately 10" x 12. (Don't worry - proper cardboard, tape and lots of bubble wrap, this will be well protected for the journey to your home or office.)
Condition: Excellent. The card backing has darkened appropriately for the age. The string however, does not show signs of the painting ever having been hanging on a wall. I suspect this piece may have spent more than a few years in a drawer or possibly on a shelf. The colors are strong, bright and opaque, these are not the transparent watercolors of today, they are the pigment paints of yesterday... The taped edge trim (the frame) is lifting with age. You may want to repair it or, leave it as is.
Size: Approximate measurements (to the outside of the frame) -- The area of the painting is 4-3/4" x 6-3/4". The full frame (glass) size is approximately 10" x 12.
Because of the glass, this item will be well wrapped and shipped in a box marked with fragile stickers.
